Transportation
Transportation is not
simply about cars. Transportation is a system to provide efficient
access among people, things, and information.
Road building has long been assumed to be the answer to transportation
problems. Recent empirical studies, however, have demonstrated
that a significant amount of new road capacity is quickly
used up due to "induced travel," which are new auto
trips attracted to new or widened roads. As a consequence,
you can't build your way out of traffic congestion with roads
alone.
The solution to our increasing traffic congestion, rather
than merely more roads, is a greater variety of choices for
getting people and things between where they are and where
they need to be. This includes more and better mass transit,
but also well-designed, mixed-use development and neighborhood
revitalization that incorporate the choice of walking and
