Pollution
Effect of Land Use Types
on Water Quality

Different land uses have different impacts in terms of pollutants in rainwater runoff. Not surprisingly, those uses that tend to pave significant portions of the site, such as malls or office parks with large surface parking lots, generate vast amounts of runoff, which carries heavy loads of contaminants. However, even the ubiquitous grass covered lawn has surprisingly high runoff. Putting in gardens and native plantings can reduce runoff at home, while reducing surface paving can save millions in paving costs and gallons of runoff throughout our communities.
